Ethocyn is a synthetic compound, manufactured by Chantal Pharmaceutical Corporation, which blocks certain hormone receptors in skin when applied to skin surface. Research with this agent has shown that it allows the skin of people over 40 (and even in their 70s) to produce elastin fiber tissues of individuals in their 20s.

The first study involved 20 subjects who applied Ethocyn to their skin and who had biopsies done at the beginning of the study and at 2 month intervals during a 6 month period. The increase in elastin tissue was, on average, approximately 100% as qualitatively measured by preferential elastin biopsy stain and computer image analysis techniques. Qualitatively, subjects reported that their skins was "smoother, tighter and less wrinkled." The findings of this study were presented at the August 2, 1994 American Academy of Dermatology meeting last Fall, as well as at UCLA Dermatology Grand Rounds.

The second clinical trial tested Ethocyn Essence, a formulated 0.5% Ethocyn concentration followed by the application of Ethocyn 0.01% in a moisturizing base. Patient biopsies were taken at baseline, 1, 2, and 3 month time intervals. The 30 day biopsy elastic tissue results shows a greater than 50% increase and at 2 months the increase was over 100%, with all subjects showing a response. Their skin had become visibly less wrinkled, especially as they would smile, frown and talk; in many cases quite dramatically improved.

By 3 months there was an even further increase in the mean elastic tissue levels. By 2 months the elastin tissue levels were comparable to the levels found in the control group of 18 to 25 years old (mean age 20). The evaluation of ultra close up photographs from the beginning to the end of the study confirmed that Ethocyn use improved the appearance, with the improvement being at a high level of statistical significance (p = .001).

Safety has been confirmed in both studies and in other testing.

REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS FOR ETHOCYN USE

Ethocyn will not get rid of every wrinkle in most people. However, it can be expected to decrease wrinkles and to make the skin smoother. The results are especially noticeable with movement of the face with expression and speech.

For example, in those who frown or smile and those whose lines are quite prominent and which take a while to smooth back out so that it looks like a badly dubbed movie, the increased elasticity will allow the skin to snap back into the appropriate position, as it does in younger individuals. The skin should be tighter and less sagging. This is true for other areas, such as the neck and the backs of the hands.

Results begin to be noticed within the first month or two of use in many individuals and within three to four months in virtually everyone. If one really wants to prove to themselves whether it works for them or not, it may be used on one side and the other side kept as a control; the two may then be compared. In order to maintain the skin elasticity it is necessary to continue to use the treatment.

DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCTS

ETHOCYN ESSENCE

The Essence is the most concentrated from of Ethocyn being sold currently by Chantal Skin Care, and thus the most effective. It is a 0.5 percent concentration of Ethocyn in a squalane formulation which is sold in a package of two 0.23 ounce vials.

The Essence should be applied to the areas of your skin which you most wish to affect by placing one drop on each site with our skin either dry, or preferably, slightly moist. The drop will need to be lightly dabbed into your skin in order to insure absorption. Apply the Essence twice a day - once in the morning after showering and again in the evening before going to bed. The effectiveness of the Essence will be greatly reduced if it is not applied twice a day. If used twice a day, the vials will last you from a month to two months, depending upon how many sites to which you apply the Ethocyn.

Note: Make sure to apply the Essence at least 5 minutes before any moisturizer or makeup, and at least 15 minutes before applying any Retin A or exfoliating acid. Also, make sure not to put the Essence too close to your eyes, as the base formulation may cause some redness in the skin in that area, which formulation base may create a stinging sensation if it actually gets into your eyes.

ETHOCYN HYDRATING COMPLEX MOISTURIZER

The hydrating complex moisturizer contains a much lower concentration of Ethocyn than the Essence, which helps to supplement the Essence while also improving the moisture content of the skin. Although the cream does contain Ethocyn, it does not have a strong enough concentration to be an effective substitute for using the Essence vials regularly.

The moisturizer should be used twice daily, any time within 10 minutes after application of the Essence. If you have a sensitivity to the moisturizer you should consider substituting another moisturizer in its place. One 2.0 ounce jar of the cream will last approximately 2 months when used twice daily.

EYE CREAM

The eye cream contains a low concentration of Ethocyn equal to the hydrating complex moisturizer and is designed to be applied in the area around the eyes, including the eyelids, primarily as a supplement for the Essence. The eye cream should be applied twice daily, which should be enough to provide results, although much more slowly than with the 0.5% Ethocyn Essence. One container of the eye cream should last one to two months.

ETHOCYN HAND AND BODY MOISTURIZER

The hand and body moisturizer, like the eye cream and hydrating complex moisturizer, contains a very low Ethocyn concentration. However unlike the eye cream and hydrating complex moisturizer, the hand and body moisturizer is designed for application on areas other than your face. As with the other Ethocyn products, application should be twice daily, and the 6.7 ounce container should last one to two months.

Note: If you experience a sensitivity to any of the ingredients used in the base formulation of the products, stop using the product immediately and contact this office.

GEL CLEANSER

The cleanser is intended to be used for the purpose of removing dirt and oils from your skin before application of the Ethocyn Essence. The gel cleanser should be applied after wetting your face with warm water and massaged in, followed by another rinsing of your face. It is intended to be used twice a day before the application of the Ethocyn Essence, but it does not include any Ethocyn itself.

REVITALIZING MASQUE

This product is not an alpha hydroxy product nor does it include Ethocyn, but instead is intended to act as a very mild exfoliator, helping to remove the imperfections in the top layer of the skin. It is intended to be applied two or three times a week, and should be applied after washing your face and left on for approximately 20 minutes, and then washed off with warm water. Note that, like all exfoliators, the masque will make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

TWO PIECE ETHOCYN PACKAGE

This package includes the Ethocyn Essence vials and the Ethocyn Hydrating Complex moisturizer (A and B). These two products, respectively, should last two months.

THREE PIECE ETHOCYN PACKAGE - 30 DAYS

This package includes the Ethocyn Essence, Ethocyn Hydrating Complex moisturizer and the Ethocyn Eye Cream (A, B, and C). These three products, respectively, should last about 30 days.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:

Apply the Ethocyn Essence to the areas to be treated twice daily. This should be done when the face is clean. Its formulation base, not Ethocyn itself, may sting if it gets into the eyes. A small amount will spread easily over a wide area. It should be rubbed in well. This should be followed by the Ethocyn Hydrating Complex Moisturizer, except tot he eyelid area where the Ethocyn Eye Cream would be preferred, and to non-facial areas where it would best be followed by the Ethocyn Hand and Body Cream. Makeup may be applied over Ethocyn.

Ethocyn may be used in conjunction with Retin-A or alpha-hydroxy acid products, based on current experience. Although no one has been found to have allergic response or irritation from the Ethocyn molecule, it is possible that some individuals may have a sensitivity to some ingredients used in the base formulation of the products; therefore, if a problem occurs, stop the use of the product and contact this office immediately.

OBTAINING ETHOCYN:

Ethocyn is now being sold as a cosmetic through Chantal Skin Care Corporation or Stanson Medical Marketing Corporation through an 800 number and may be obtained in person at this office.

HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS:

Make sure to use a sunscreen in conjunction with the various Ethocyn products, as sunscreens help to prevent increased wrinkling that can be caused by sun exposure. Ethocyn products do not make your skin photo-sensitive like Retin-A and exfoliating acids (glycolics and alpha-hydroxy).

If you are using other anti-wrinkle agents in addition to the Ethocyn products, be sure to allow some time between the application of the Ethocyn products and other products such as Retin-A and glycolic acids - at least 10 to 15 minutes. This will allow more time for the skin to absorb the Ethocyn.

When using Ethocyn, be patient when waiting for results. Although Ethocyn usually delivers results far more quickly than Retin-A or the exfoliating acids, results will still take a minimum of one to two months. Results also vary depending upon your skin and amount of wrinkles, but will be noticeable with an increase in the elasticity of your skin and its ability to maintain its shape.
