Blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, boils and cysts

The term acne includes blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, boils and cysts. Acne most often occurs on the face, neck, shoulders and buttocks. These are the areas of the skin that secrete the most oil. When oil is not secreted through the pores of the skin properly, acne can occur.

Acne is not caused by dirt or diet. At times of stress, acne becomes worse. Exam time, social and business relationships, or sudden over-exercise are some of the things that can make acne worse.

Excess hormone secretion also contributes to acne. At puberty and premenstrually, more sex hormones are secreated by the endocrine glands. Because hormones and stress are fundamental contriubtors to acne, there is no instant or permanent cure, but much can be done to improve the conditon. Waiting to outgrow acne can be a serious mistake. Teatment will improve your appearance, and prevent pitted scars that may last a lifetime.

The purpose of the acne soaps and creams is to dry the skin. Dry skin does not cause wrinkles. Only choronic sun exposure can do that. If you become too dry or irritated, discontinue the medicaiton for a day or two.

Natural oils will return to your skin. Do not apply moisturizers or lubricants. This will only compound the problem.

Non-oily cosmetics may be used. Don't assume that medications and methods prescribed for a friend will be good for you. Every person has a unique combination of problems requiring individual care.

Acne-prone people frequently have dandruff-a flaking, itching condition of the scalp. It generally appears two to four days after shampooing. The more oily your hair is, the more often you should shampoo it. Special shampoos and conditioners are available for people with acne.

Acne usually improves with moderate sun exposure. Alcohol-based sun protectives should be used on a regular daily basis. Internal medications such as antibiotics, hormones, or Accutane may also be prescribed. Topical medication should be applied sparingly. If you can see the cream or lotion on your skin, you have used too much. Scars usually result form picking or squeezing with the fingers. A blackhead remover will not cause scarring, and may even be fun to use, though may cause temporary irritation.
